Overview

Old Dominion University (ODU) is located in Norfolk, Virginia. It was founded in 1930 as an extension of the College of William and Mary. Two years later, it joined Virginia Tech to jointly train teachers and engineering talents. In 1962, it separated from its alma mater to establish an independent university. In 1969, it was upgraded to the current university system. Subsequently, it began to award master's and doctoral degrees. It is now a Carnegie R1 research-based public university. The campus is located on the seaside, adjacent to the largest naval base in the United States. The total number of students is about 24,000, more than 30% of whom are related to the military. The races and backgrounds are diverse. ODU has six major colleges covering liberal arts, business management, education, engineering, health sciences and technology, and offers more than 120 undergraduate programs and more than 130 graduate programs.
