The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is located in New London, Connecticut. Founded in 1876, it is one of the five largest federal military academies in the United States and the only one that does not require a recommendation from a member of Congress to apply. The college offers a Bachelor of Science degree in ten engineering and professional disciplines, and upon graduation students are commissioned as ensigns in the Coast Guard and commit to a minimum of five years of active duty. USCGA does not charge tuition, offers full scholarships, and emphasizes the core values of honor, respect, and responsibility. Freshmen are required to participate in a seven-week "Swab Summer" training to develop physical fitness, leadership and teamwork spirit. The academy has about 200 graduates each year and is committed to cultivating future leaders of maritime multi-mission military forces with leadership and professional capabilities.
