Overview

The United States Naval Academy, or USNA, was founded in 1845 and is located in Annapolis, Maryland. It is a federal military academy responsible for training junior officers for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The primary mission of the Academy is to train junior officers of the Navy and Marine Corps in a variety of specialties in a four-year undergraduate education plus three years of sea training. Successful applicants to the U.S. Naval Academy ultimately attain the rank of warrant officer, are promoted to second lieutenant upon graduation, and are required to serve for a minimum of five years. The Academy encompasses the fields of engineering, math, science, humanities and social sciences. The Academy is renowned for its rigorous academic and military training and has produced a large number of outstanding military personnel and distinguished individuals from all walks of life.
